Thermal compound during cleaning?

I want to clean my old laptop (since I never want to throw away the good old part). Should I also insert a new thermal paste after cleaning the fan? The laptop is about 11 years old. I would not do this urgently (Info: the laptop blows after about 30 min. Very hot air), because the laptop should only be used by my user for emergencies, but my little sister uses it for gaming (roblox) from time to time to the laptop on the 2nd user.

After 11 years there's not really anything left.

Va

Would be sensible. Check out the consistency, especially with laptops it dries up after a while.

Fr

Do you have any suggestions, what kind?

Va

Doesn't really matter. Take the Arctic mx-4 which is cheap and sufficient.

Fr

One more question… Is it difficult to get to the CPU since I have never opened a laptop / PC (but watched / read tutorials)

Va

It may be fiddly with laptops. Depends on the laptop but if you do it for the first time I would plan 30 minutes. It is much easier on a PC, but you often have to upgrade a lot on a laptop. But not really difficult.

Fr

OK, thank you for the little info!

Va

A little tip: do not apply too much thermal paste and remove the old one thoroughly and clean the die. For some devices I have reached up to -30 ° C (before) by cleaning + new thermal compound.
