Does your laptop have an FN key? If so, the FN key can usually be used as a replacement for laptops without a number pad. To do this, there should be small numbers on your keyboard, which are often blue and can, for example, be on any letter keys. You then press the FN key and the Alt key together with the key where the corresponding number occurs.
Since you can usually make the heart ♥ using Alt + Num3, you would have to look for a small 3.

I also wondered for a long time how it all works because I also play on a laptop. Now I've found out! You have to hold down the alt key, then hold down the fn key and then while holding down both keys you have to press 9 (from the number bar above) four times. For me it works so I hope for you too ❤.
Try it without an Alt key, that should actually work.
My mistake, the Alt key still has to be pressed.
