Realize Wi-Fi in school?

Namely: at our school, only we're currently on site (10th grade, 12 students).

We have often talked about cell phones at school. The house rules state that the mobile phone must be switched off on the entire school premises.

I have often spoken to my headmistress and IT teacher and came across important information.

According to data protection guidelines, teachers and students may not be in the same network at any time.

So the idea came to me to simply equip the rooms with Wi-Fi with devices from the TPlink EAP series and then connect them to an extra POE switch with a specially assigned VLAN.

About 2 years ago, CAT7 duplex cables were laid in all rooms of the school and connected to network sockets. The teachers can then plug themselves into these using Ethernet cables that are usually too short and go online.

If you were to connect an EAP265HD, for example, to one of the 2 sockets, you could move in the entire building thanks to Wi-Fi roaming in the same network.

The one with the cell phones was probably introduced 25 years ago because of the expensive phone bills.

Our headmistress is also very interested in digitization and has even bought 15 new laser beamers as a first measure to replace the overhead projectors from before 1970, some of which are still in use.

Student terminals have already been ordered and only need to be delivered.

To come back to the beginning, now is the best time to carry out such a conversion.

Especially since you can find at least 40 students from our school on tiktok, some of whom organize live streams in class. In fact, the right to one's own picture is always respected and the teacher is never filmed or recorded and the name is not even mentioned.

So if you want to advance digitization, the first thing you should do is provide a decent Wi-Fi in the school.

Do you still have ideas that could bring everyday school life more into the 21st century?

It should be said that some of us still have tube TVs, but some students (including myself I fall) sit in class with their own laptops and take notes.

Of course, the teachers also look to whom they allow this. If a student is already too distracted, for example, he is not allowed to bring his laptop with him.

I think that there should be uniform regulation of when, where which devices can be used in which network to what extent.

how do you see it? Are you allowed to use your devices in class? Do you have Wi-Fi at school?

This is usually done with VLANs. You put the network for the students in a VLAN and that for the teacher in another VLAN. It can all run through the same APs and the same controller.

Hardly, since a private mobile phone does not automatically run on school costs, but still on the data usage of the cell phone tariff… Students should be careful not to be distracted by cell phones or to disturb the class with unmuted devices… Therefore there are cell phones bans on the whole area… But it was definitely not a question of cost…

You should leave the digitization and network setup to specialist companies. In order to be able to use something like this effectively, a server structure with a firewall etc. Is also required to provide learning content and ensure data security, etc. You don't shake that out of your sleeve with a few Wi-Fi points…
