Older games: danger with copy protection?

I'll get straight to the point: I have an Acer Nitro 5 (i.e. A relatively new and for the price extremely good laptop with Win10, Ryzen 5 (4000 series), GTX1650, an SSD and 8GB RAM).

I recently rediscovered a few older games on DVD, and because I also have an external DVD drive, I wanted to ask if my laptop would run those games. My main concern here is the possible danger from copy protection, which may be the cause. Could prevent.

The games would be (with year of publication):

Gothic 3 Götterdämmerung (2008)

Jurassic Park The Game (2011)

Turok (2008)

It would be nice if you could write me an answer if you have knowledge of it or know where to research.

Just play. With games like this nobody cares if they are cracked.
And if you want to be on the safe side you can turn off the Wi-Fi.

If you had to try it out, if the copy protection is no longer supported by Windows 10, then a no CD patch could help, but it is only legal if it is offered directly by the developer, Mafia 1 from 2002 made it playable on Windows 10 for me.

If there's no No CD patch, you could see whether you can reactivate the copy protection using a CMD command.

It could well be true that there may be problems with copy protection.

However, you can buy these games (without DRM) again for relatively little money at gog:

https://www.gog.com/game/turok

Tip: https://www.gog.com/game/turok_2_seeds_of_evil

https://www.gog.com/game/gothic_3_forsaken_gods

https://www.gog.com/game/gothic_3

But I couldn't find this Jurassic Park - The Game.

Not even on Steam. But there are plenty of alternatives there:

Jurassic World Evolution (+ many expansions) and Lego Jurassic Park (trilogy)

https://store.steampowered.com/...m=jurassic

So, in case the DVDs shouldn't work with you…

Nevertheless, you should buy the two Turok games again from gog. These are visually pepped up and also run at high resolutions and in widescreen.

So, first of all, a huge thank you for your detailed answer, I really appreciate it.

Now I have two more questions:

This site, gog.com, seems to be really good. If I were to get Gothic 3 there now, then I would no longer have a problem with copy protection (because of DRM free). But when I install G3, can I really play it? I mean the technical details (system requirements) if my components are TOO NEW.
The second question is just an "guess" question. The second game, Jurassic Park The Game, is from 2011, and I wanted to ask if you were following your gut feeling, so to speak. See if this game would work on DVD on my laptop.

At gog you even have a 30-day right of return.

And I can also refer you to the very active forum if you have problems. And also write to support in German or English. Incidentally, the company is based in Poland. (In the background: "CD Project" => Witcher series, Cyberpunk 2077).

There's actually no "too new" here…

And the games themselves are (from a technical point of view) very frugal and would run well on an old Pentium 4.

If no copy protection messes with them, they will almost certainly work. I myself have bought a lot of games from gog and only rarely had any problems.

That's just one of the pillars of their business model. And originally they were called "Good old Games".

Here are the system requirements for the games. All you have to do is enter your hardware data and you will receive a "performance forecast".

https://systemanforderungen.com/spiel/gothic-3

https://systemanforderungen.com/spiel/gothic-3-forsaken-gods

https://systemanforderungen.com/spiel/jurassic-park-the-game

Of course, your new CPU should also be listed on this page, otherwise it won't work.

ca

Wow, the website is great. Thanks a million for that. I've been looking for such a comparison page of system requirements for ages, but so far only found relatively bad ones. But this page is great, all my data (CPU, GPU, RAM) were in there.

One final question: You wrote that you yourself have bought a lot of games from gog and that you had no problems with them. Which laptop / PC did you have there?

de

Another useful comparison page would be:

https://pc-builds.com/cyri/

There you can also have the theoretical "bottleneck" of the CPU and GPU calculated, as well as the power required for a power supply unit (PSU).

And my "current" desktop PC works with a C2Q (Xeon E5450 (4x3GHz), 8GB DDR3 and a GTX 1050ti. OS: Win7pro and Linux Mint 20.1

This "771" -CPU modded for the Socket 775 came on the market 11.2007 and is comparable with the C2Q Q9650,

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E5450-vs-Intel-Core2-Quad-Q9650

(I always have to specify the Q9650 for system requirements…)

This old CPU is not yet compatible with Win10 at the moment. However, a few microcode patches can be used to help. But at this point there's a bit of a problem with me. Therefore I use this Linux to be able to go online safely. And without a network, I'm so far safe with Win7.

My "current" ancient notebook is a Pentium 4 (32bit, 3GHz) with 2GB DDR1 and an ATI Radeon 9600/9700 (128MB) from "Fujitsu-Siemens". A (32-bit) Win7 and the (32-bit) MX-Linux run on it. Originally it was a WinXP system.

This notebook is only a backup system. And it's amazing what can still be done with this old hardware…

I will replace the MX-Linux with an older 32-bit Mint or Lubuntu. There are also games for Linux on gog and these require an Ubuntu-based Linux.

A modern desktop PC with an AMD R7-5800x on an "MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk" with (theoretically) an RTX 3070 is planned. But I will probably install the GTX 1050ti there for the time being. And my older GTX 750ti then comes back into the Xeon computer.

Yes moin, information about information… Thank you very much.

The comparison sites are great and I will remember gog.com if the Gothic 3 DVD is not running.

Then I want to give you a few pearls right away:

These are widely spread genres, some of which are also quite suitable for "in between".
