As some of you already know, I wanted to set up a dual boot system, but that caused some problems because I have an Acer laptop where the UEFI is very "special" for dual boot with Linux and Windows (you have to "Supervisor" set password, for example to be able to see GRUB at all, Windows Boot Manager does not need this setting).
That's why I decided to do everything in a VM, which benefits the GRUB (ie virtualized) and leaves only two Windows systems on my laptop, both of which use Windows Boot Manager.
So now for my important question:
Is it possible to create guests in VirtualBox with EFI Secure Boot (ie EFI virtualization now supports EFI Secure Boot), as I only want to test Linux distributions that are Secure Boot capable?
For this I will probably also set up the PC again completely, so that I have a Linux (this works, even without a "Supervisor" password) and the corresponding EFI partition (have one for Linux and one for Windows, so is the Windows Boot Manager on a different EFI partition than GRUB) and then install it in a VM in VirtualBox (if possible with EFI Secure Boot).
EFI SB is supported by VirtualBox in my opinion. Otherwise, you can take VMware Workstation, which even guarantees this feature. However, it must be explicitly turned on in VirtualBox. Did you install the extension package?
No, not yet, VirtualBox have not yet installed, because I'm just looking for an alternative to the not working to my satisfaction Dual Boot Systems. But if I install it, the expansion package will always come with it, as long as you mean the "Extensions Pack".
If I, but as I said, will do all this with VirtualBox (if it is possible), I will first reinstall the whole PC, so that the working Linux and the EFI partition with the Linux bootloader (Windows is on another) deleted and thus no problems arise because of the deletion of the 2nd EFI partition.
As far as I know, VirtualBox supports EFI virtualization, but not EFI Secure Boot virtualization, but the stand is still from VirtualBox 5.x or an older version of VirtualBox 6, not the current version.
Would you rather recommend VirtualBox or VMware Workstation (use the laptop privately, not commercial)?
VMware workstation. It really can do it all. Linux is even installed automatically. The catch: It's not cheap.
How much is it? If the price is to be paid once, maybe I can still use. Is it VMware Workstation Pro or VMware Workstation Player?
It is a bit expensive: 178,71 euro. The payment is unique. And yes, it's Workstation Pro.
Is that synonymous with the player? So workstation player?
Do you know if it is in VirtualBox, because 178,71 euro is then too expensive for me?
And if it goes in VirtualBox, which version?
So much so I know, goes in VirtualBox EFI, but not UEFI Secure Boot
Just test it. PS: For VMware you can find cracked keys everywhere.
The stupid thing is that I do not want to use cracked
Understandable.
Just take VBox for testing. VMware is also more for professional users. First install the distro of your choice. Would have to work.
Yes, I had already, but since I wanted to test something with Secure Boot and it was not supported by VirtualBox, I switched to Dual Boot, with which I finally was not satisfied, and now I'm looking for a virtualization software, the can handle Secure Boot
You could use VMware Player… It's a free version of Workstation Pro.
Yes, but does the Secure Boot support guests?
Is possible. I do not know right now.
I do not care what program I use unless it's VMware Workstation Pro or So expensive and it supports Secure Boot
If necessary, you can take QEMU. But this can only be operated effectively by command line.
Where can you find out if VirtualBox or VMware Workstation Player provide Secure Boot support?
No idea… Google?
Yes, but I did not find anything useful
Most distros do not necessarily need Secure Boot… Is it about data security or future security?
There does not seem to be much need for SB on VMs…
The point is that I want to try and find out which ones support Distros Secure Boot so that I later (possibly) know which ones are reasonable for a dual boot. But my current laptop does not work as expected
Hi
(You have to set a "Supervisor" password to see GRUB at all, for example, Windows Boot Manager does not need this setting).
No wonder where Microsoft is one of the companies that sign the bootloader - they of course sign your products themselves.
Is it possible to create guests in VirtualBox with EFI Secure Boot (ie EFI Virtualization now supports EFI Secure Boot),
UEFI only goes for special hosts, so not for Linux.
Why should that be good if you already have problems with a real UEFI?
Linux Hase
I have not problems with the EFI, but with the display of the installed Ubuntu, with deepin it works
I do not have problems with the EFI, but with the display of the installed Ubuntu
Do you mean a graphic problem or what is the "ad" exactly?
Linux Hase
