Minecraft on the laptop?

I recently downloaded Minecraft on my laptop. When I first started playing, I noticed that I couldn't place blocks or attack mobs. The controls were displayed on Minecraftwiki, but only with a mouse. Do I really have to buy a mouse or can I change it somehow?
