How much to invest in a new laptop (programming)?

I thought about buying a new laptop. My current one starts with a few quirks. But mainly it is a bit heavy and big, I would like to get a laptop for on the go, which I can then use in vocational school or on longer train journeys.

What exactly do I want to do? Well, program. In the vocational school we do this pretty much every day, but rather in smaller programs. I would like to program one or the other game in my spare time, but also rather smaller, simple 2D games. Since I have a graphics tablet, it would of course also be a good idea to draw on the go, but that shouldn't be the main reason for the new investment.

Now the question is… How far should I reach into my pocket? I don't want to use it for gaming, I want to buy a real PC for that later. I could then use it for more demanding programs or games… The laptop is more likely to develop parts of a program. I think so. So that I can simply be productive on the go and not have to depend on the school PCs at vocational school, which reset after every restart and you can't save anything anyway.

Now I've discovered some computers with i5 processors and 8GB RAM. The graphics card was usually just a simple internal graphics chip. 512 GB SSD. The price was around 500-600 euro. Now, for example, I've found one for around 680 euro. With 16GB RAM and at least a GeForce MX 330 and 2GB graphics memory. But it's a bit more money, around 100 euro.

I know, in the end, I should know how much I'm willing to spend and what I want… But I don't really know how much I need. According to my description, how much would you invest? What should he at least have?

An old mill is sufficient for programming at the beginning…

Jokes aside - if you don't need the latest on the market, an i5 with 8GB of RAM and an SSD will do. It runs quickly and you can use it for a few more years.

I'm an application developer and use C / C ++, Java, PHP, SQL and other scripting / programming languages - the limits of an i5 can't be reached that quickly…
