How long do notebooks / laptops last for you?

I noticed that I have had to replace my notebook every 2.5 - 3 years since 2010, because it always went broken. I usually always buy something from HP in the price of 500 - 600 euro. Is that normal? How long does a notebook / laptop last with you?

Tr

I have had my laptop since 2010 and use it every day. Purchase price 650 euro. Runs like new.

Or

Never replaced the battery or had repairs?

ra

Wow. What is your secret?

Tr

Battery is completely gone, good point haha.

But no, no repairs. I never cleaned it inside, so dusted it or something.

Ma

I have been using my MacBook Pro since January 2013. It is still running smoothly and should last three to four years.

Addendum:

The battery was changed once about two years ago.

I had an 800 euro notebook for about 6 years and it worked like on the first day, then sold on don't know what it does now…

Notebook requirement is only an SSD, do not operate continuously with the battery, certainly not charge the battery and operate at the same time. Dust every 3 to 5 years yourself or for 50 euro from a specialist.

Or

My problem will probably be that I do exactly the same thing with the battery. Charge and use at the same time and hardly take it off the battery.

Tr

I use it 15 hours a day, but in the 9 hours I sleep I just shut it down. Letting a laptop run quickly results in death.

And otherwise. Pay attention to the information: e.g. Flat hard surface. So that the cooling gets enough air. And YES don't put anything in front of the ventilation!

Em

Then you may need a new battery.

Rather, only the battery is broken, but I also recommend an SSD instead of an HDD… Because less heat and 10 times faster

My ex's laptop became too hot and didn't work anymore, with a new SSD it suddenly ran out for 2 years

ra

You shut it down completely? Someone once told me that you should only put the laptop into sleep mode, otherwise it will break due to the up / down movement. Maybe that's my problem.

I mostly use ThinkPads. My current one is only 4 months old because my original ThinkPad (5 years old) had a motherboard defect and it was no longer worth repairs. I paid 1565 euro for that. I have a 9 year old Fujitsu Lifebook T901 for very simple tasks. With its i7-2960XM, it is no longer too fast, but is still sufficient for simple tasks.

Tr

No, I'm just hibernating.

I only call it down because it is basically the same, except that he has a lot less work to do when he climbs up.

(Yes, don't confuse hibernation with energy-saving mode! Some do… Hibernation is when you can remove the power cable (and battery) without anything happening)

My Samsung notebook is now over 8 years old and runs wonderfully better than ever thanks to the upgraded SSD and RAM.

Only the battery is pretty exhausted by now, but that doesn't bother me.

Only the left mouse button is broken, it is now wobbling. Otherwise everything is wonderful, thermal paste never renewed, dust never removed and still pleasantly quiet, even idle in some cases without a fan.

I definitely don't want to give it away, the new device will probably not stay with me for so long, so I'll stay with my old laptop for as long as possible.

Tr

5 years? I do this every year with thermal pastes etc.

Tr

Oh the Fujitsus. Back then there were good things. I don't know if they are still today. It is still the same with the ThinkPad
