Which laptop to buy?

I want a new laptop for my birthday but I don't know which one to buy and where from. I don't want to spend so much money but still have a certain quality. Which laptop brand can you recommend? Should I buy it on eBay / eBay classifieds / ? How expensive should the laptop be so that it has a certain quality?

So I don't really need it to work at most for PowerPoint etc. It shouldn't break down so quickly and be easy to use
