RAM soldered to Lenovo ThinkPad T420?

I bought two more Lenovo ThinkPad T420s in the past few days and one of the two seems to have 4GB of RAM soldered to it. Can someone tell me more about this?
Are there models of the T420 and T420s in which RAM has also been soldered? The same thing I ask myself when it comes to Wi-Fi. One model has a Wi-Fi module, the other does not.
Technical specifications:
Lenovo ThinkPad T420 (1)
---
UEFI version 1.23
Board Serial 1ZJJP15130F
CPU type Intel Core i5-2520M
CPU Speed 2.50GHz
Model Type 4180AL1
Memory 6144MB
Wi-Fi module false

Lenovo ThinkPad T420 (2)
----
UEFI version 1.52
Board Serial 1ZLEH288290
CPU type Intel Core i5-2540M
CPU speed 2.60MHz
Memory 4096MB
Model Type 4180PA5
Wi-Fi module true

The ThinkPad T420 (1) had no RAM and WLAN module installed and was subsequently expanded with 2GB DDR-3 RAM. I never knew before and would like to know which device I use for what before I put on my "Distris".

How do you get the RAM soldered?

No are not soldered one is at the bottom and a latch at the top under the keyboard. Here is a video for you and oh yes pay attention to the tension with the ramriegeln

Dr

How do you get the RAM soldered?

It was just a guess as I couldn't explain the remaining ~ 4GB of RAM. It was clear to me that there was more RAM somewhere. But did not know whether it was just plugged in or how many new devices were soldered.

Otherwise I have the stronger T420s in use. The weaker T420 are now somewhat new territory and do not (yet) know their inner workings exactly. I mean what is installed and what is the additional RAM.

Sh

No. Nothing soldered. There are two slots.

Dr

Oh, good to know. I only used the stronger T420s and that's a little bit different. The difference between the two T420s irritated me.

Dr

Thanks, I would have been amazed at the T420. I was still not sure and only because of that did not want to screw on. I was a bit irritated by the different config.

Sh

The T420s is no stronger than the T420. The only difference I know is that it is narrower and has a smaller display.

Sh

Unscrewing is quick. Loosen two letters on the bottom and then open the flap.

Sh

I'll send you a photo if you want. It's next to me here.

I know that and just unscrewed the service cover. There was no Wi-Fi and RAM module plugged in. Quickly checked what I still have there and then added the 2GB. I just didn't know that there was another module hidden under the keyboard.

Dr

All good, I believe you too. Aren't my first ThinkPads. Now stand around five in number.

Sh

However, I'm a bit confused now: With my T420s, both RAM modules are accessible under this flap. I don't have to take the keyboard out to get to the other one.

Sh

And with my T61 - which still does its job reliably - that's the same.

Dr

The T420s is no stronger than the T420.

Yes, something is. In the T420s there's a "better" display, in the highest config an i7 instead of the i5, to the Intel HD 3000 there are ne Nvidia NVS 4200m and USB 3.0 ports. No ext. SATA port: /

Sh

OK.

I didn't know it before.

Dr

Yes, that's exactly why I was or was confused. I wanted to know which modules are installed in the models. Then there was no module to be seen at all and I asked here. I'm going to check again.

Dr

I only know because I have the T420s here myself.

Dr

I have now screwed on both T420s again and checked. In both T420 without S I only have one accessible RAM port. One is then 2GB and the other 4GB RAM hidden.

which still does its job reliably - is that also the case.

The parts are actually not dead and both shot for 140 euro on eBay. Lucky hit and an original Lenovo battery packs just under 8 hours.

go

With pleasure.
