If you do not have any experience, I would not make it too long. On the one hand, as you already say, it can be very impractical, on the other hand, too-long nails look exaggerated.
The nail designer can cut you down to the length you like.
And if you ever want to longer, then you can make them new.
I agree with the two. To get used to it, it's better to start with short gel nails first.
