as a simulation, open TTD would be recommended even Anno until 1701 should still work and probably Siedler2 the next generation.
If there's anything storyline about where the story is and you can't get it all done even after months of playing, then Battle for Wesnoth is completely free and open source, with tons of mods and DLCs for free
As a role-play according to D & D rules Baldur's Gate 2 Enhanced Edition, very extensive story with witty dialogues where you end up the god of war.
It should also run on laptop until Civilization 4, as well as C & C red alert 2
in the sci-fi range, the whole X-series should work up to and including X3 Albion Prelude
