Stupid question but if you Can anyone sell stolen IT hardware (routers, laptops, etc.), can somehow be tracked via the MAC address or something?
As an example, a friend of mine who works in the IT department of a medium-sized company probably still has a relatively expensive router in his car. He does not really know that he has or still has and is now considering to sell.
Can this be tracked via the MAC address or serial number or so theoretically afterwards when this is then used by the buyer?
Not really, but who would risk his job for that?
Thanks, no one has asked if that's right or wrong. It will probably be clear to him that it is wrong and actually correct cravings.
How is it traced?
He probably thinks that there's no risk because he has been lying in the car for months and no one asks for it or something. I do not know. I was just interested.
"How is it traced?"
I'm also very interested in that.
Mac, serial number and other identifiers.
Yes, I have had such a case recently. The unsuspecting buyer found that his device was registered with another company. High quality devices are tracked. The serial number can be read just like fixed MAC addresses. At the latest during the firmware update, the serial number and customer registration will be checked.
If it is only about the legal sale of used goods, this can be cleaned up. Company theft is not a trivial offense.
