Linux Windows broken?

I have had Linux as my operating system for a long time. A friend of mine, Gustav, said that Microsoft Windows is better. So I called them, but they told me that you can't have two operating systems at the same time. I then downloaded a cheaper version from the web, but it is illegal. I did that and then my laptop smeared and doesn't start properly. Whenever I start him he picks and then goes out.

Sa

That's what happens when you download illegal stuff. An app is often still fine, but something like that had to happen with an entire illegal operating system.

ta

First rule: when anyone says, "OS XXX is better." then don't listen to him because he's either a fool or an ideological idealist.

The application always decides on the operating system.

I then downloaded a cheaper version from the web, but it is illegal. I did that and then my laptop smeared and doesn't start properly.

And you wonder because? 🙄

The motto is to completely flatten the computer and set it up again.
I suppose the fact that you are asking here means that you are not doing any backups. Now you know why.

Sa

But what should I do now? Linux alone already cost 50 euro and this illegal window cost another 15 euro. And the laptop wasn't cheap either

Sa

You can only go to a specialist who can reset it.

Sa

But I have tables for school and my pre-academic paper with 25 pages. There are also the order forms for the Christmas gifts (Nintendo Switch) and I don't want to buy them again.

Sa

But there's my pre-scientific work (25 pages) and order forms on it, which I still have to print out.

But I have tables for school and my pre-scientific work with 25 pages

As I said: now you know why you make backups.
It has only been pointed out continuously for well over 10 years.

No backup? No pity! 🤷♂️

Sa

Will be difficult. You can only try to save the hard drive. But it will be very dirty from the Windows.

Br

If you're happy with Linux, don't let anyone else talk you into it. Both systems have advantages and disadvantages.
You can of course have both operating systems on one computer. However, it is recommended to install Windows first and then Linux, because the Windows boot loader does not allow Linux to be started. I.e. You would have to invest time afterwards if the order was reversed
It wouldn't have been necessary to download an illegal copy. You can try any Windows version for 90 days free of charge (it's only 30 days, but you can reset this counter twice). You can download everything you need from the official Microsoft website. If you like it, you could have just bought a license key

I can't understand the problem you have now, but of course an illegal copy of the operating system could be responsible, so I would reinstall.

Br

Remove the hard disk, install it elsewhere and copy data from there.

Sa

I had backups ON MY LAPTOP! AND I DON'T HAVE MY PATOP RESET DUE TO THE GUSTAV. Can you legally do something? The operator of the website is unfortunately based in Thailand.

Br

Which Linux operating system costs 50 euro?

Sa

I also know about the 30 days, but I called and they told me it wouldn't work because I already have Linux.

Sa

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop in action

Br

They're talking nonsense. Thousands of people have done this before you. They just have nothing to do with each other. It is shameful that Microsoft employees are so incompetent or lie so brazenly.

Ca

As I said, first install windows, then install Linux.

ta

I'll translate: "I don't like the answer, that's why I'm now writing in capital letters!"
And no: you didn't have any backups. Backups are never on the device on which the main data is located.

What you are experiencing at the moment is the hard fall on the floor - caused by your own stupidity (use pirated copies!) In connection with looking for blame on others… Great strategy not to solve your problems.

Br

Red Hat for 50 euro? But that wasn't legal, was it? Red hat usually costs several hundred euro. You can of course take a free Linux (apart from Red Hat, I don't know any paid Linux), e.g. CentOS is the free version of RedHat. Otherwise, Ubuntu and Mint are highly recommended, especially for laptops.

Dr

With a dual or multi-boot system, you should always install Windows first and then Linux. That depends primarily on the Windows boot loader. Now the question arises whether your hard drive was formatted and, if so, whether the partitions with your Linux are also affected. If not, you could at least try to reinstall the GRUB bootloader.

Alternatively, boot from a Linux Live CD, see what data can be saved and then reinstall the operating system. As TheFamousSpy has already correctly written, you should 1. Follow the correct installation sequence and 2. Only load installation media from secure sources. The child has already fallen into the well. Remember to always have a backup ready for the future. Separate important data from the system and save it externally.

ta

Well, I wouldn't necessarily want to connect a suspected virus-infected system to any other computer.
Nowadays even Linux does not offer enough security to do this "blindly".

Ph

Are you aware that your copy of Windows is illegal and are you wondering whether something can be legally done?

Why don't you ask the police?

Fe

So I suggest starting a Linux live system from the USB stick. You can then mount the hard drives and try to rescue the data that is important to you.

Br

I don't really see it as a problem now. I don't run any programs there, i.e. The Trojan etc. Is there at most as a file but is not executed.

In the end I didn't even mention the easiest way, dear questioner:

Create a bootable USB stick with a Linux operating system (I would take Ubuntu). Plug in and boot from this and start as a live system, then you can access the hard drive and copy the data (ideally plug in a second empty USB stick).

Sa

OK thank you

Sa

Well, I bought it semi-legally.

Br

Half-gal is actually always not legal…
