Broken laptop. Reason unknown?

I was given a rather expensive laptop some time ago, but it was defective. Unfortunately, I don't know what exactly happened to it. After unscrewing it looked like Coke or something like that had run into the laptop. If you try to turn it on, a light lights up briefly (on the power button) and the fan spins for a few seconds, the DVD drive also makes a brief noise, but that's it again. What could be the reason for this?
