I want to get into the Linux world and get a laptop. It should have 12-13 ", the possibility of a SSD and at least 8GB of RAM (better 16) and the standard ports and if possible a long-lasting battery. I have heard good of IBM ThinkPads, but I hardly know the devices. It may be a used one, reliability and robustness (I travel a lot) would be an advantage.
What would you recommend?
This is a very good question. I would recommend you to buy a notebook that is directly provided by the manufacturer for Linux. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble along the way.
Take a look at Tuxedocomputers or Dell. I own a Tuxedo notebook and have never had any problems with it.
Have myself for years good experience with Lenovo (IBM) Thinkpads made.
These have also been considered Linux friendly for years.
I myself drive Linux Mint on my Thinkpads.
Which laptop should I buy for Linux?
So either you buy directly a ready pre-configured device (Tuxedo, ixsoft, Slimbook) then you know for sure that all get, or you buy one from IBM / Lenovo or Dell, because these devices are mostly to be found in the professional company environment and because of the wide spreading the hardware is known and fully supported.
I also have 3 Thinkpad laptops (T401, T41p and T60) on which of course a GNU / Linux distribution is installed.
