Convert DVD to MP4 file?

Is there any free software that I can use to convert DVD to mp4 file. I received a DVD but no longer have a DVD player. Just an older laptop with a DVD drive. With this I wanted to convert the DVD to an mp4 file. However, I only find software that costs money. Mostly around 40 euro. But it's not worth it for a DVD. Are there any free alternatives? On the whole portals like Chip it is always advertised as free, but then they cost money. Or you have a watermark in it, which goes over the whole picture, so that the film doesn't bring you anything.

Perhaps someone can tell me a program from my own experience that I can download for free.

Make mkv. First convert to MKV and then convert to mp4 using another program.

What kind of DVD is it? A movie on a commercial DVD or a DVD that someone toasted for you? You won't have any fun with a commercial DVD, most of them are copy-protected and you can't copy or convert them. Except with commercial software, which is banned in Germany because it is illegal.

Was a commercial film, actually an older documentary. But it was probably without copy protection and I could convert it without any problems.
