Where do deleted photos go?

Assuming you delete your pictures from the gallery, then the photos have disappeared from your cell phone, laptop, etc.

But do they end up somewhere else?

When the file is deleted, the location of the file is released so that the memory is overwritten on the spot. There are methods with which deleted files that have not yet been overwritten can be reproduced again, but that can only be done by the police or the NSA. Where the picture was previously saved, something else will be saved at the next opportunity, for example the next picture. At least that's the case with most operating systems. As mentioned, it does not bring much unless you are a CIA agent.
