I have a laptop that contains Windows 8.1 with a valid license. If I update the laptop to Windows 10 Home with the Microsoft MediaCreation tool, will the old Windows 8.1 license be reused or do I have to buy a new Windows 10 Home license first?

It should work like this. In the worst case, a Win10 license won't cost you 30 euro on Amazon. Be careful with re-sellers, if it's only 3 euro, stay away.
