Does an eGPU work with an internal display?

I have an eGPU on my laptop. In order for the graphics card to be used, the external display must be inserted into the card and not with the laptop.

But what does it look like now when I use the laptop with eGPU without an external monitor? Do I also have the performance of the external graphics card on the internal display?

As far as I know, you have to use an external monitor.
