From LAN to WLAN?

The property management provided me with the Internet for my apartment. There's a LAN cable and the "hole" provided for it. However, I can only connect my laptop with this LAN cable. So I would need Wi-Fi in the apartment in order to be able to use all devices (cell phone, tablet, etc.).

If I want to connect to the Internet via LAN on my laptop, I have to log into the browser with the access data (user name and password) that I received from the property management in order to have Internet access.

Now to my question: I bought a wireless router. I connected this with the LAN cable. If I want to connect to the Internet via WLAN, I have to enter the access data that can be found on the back of the modem. Now it says "Connected but no internet".

Does anyone know their way around and could help me? Would be very grateful!

What you need is called an access point. These are their own devices, but also many routers, for example many Fritzboxes, can work as access points, but you have to set them up.

To connect more than one device via LAN cable, you need a switch. To get Wi-Fi, you need an access point. It is connected to the socket via a LAN cable. If you want to have both LAN connections and WLAN, you need a switch and an access point, and there are also combination devices for this.

In principle, you could also connect a wireless router, in which a possibly integrated modem must be switched off. This would give you connection options via LAN cable and WLAN, and your devices would be better separated from the rest of the network.
