What is this shaft for?

On my laptop there's a slot with contacts inside above the DVD drive (here replaced by an SSD) (see photo above).

Can someone tell me what belongs in there? So far there was only a plastic part, as shown in the picture below, for protection.

CD drive

em

This is the DVD drive

Li

No, I mean the thing over the drive bay. The little one with the contacts inside.

Al

Isn't that the HDMI port?

cu

Not correct

ti

Wow… We're all waiting for your enlightning answer, Quizmaster:-)

Li

I agree

cu

Come immediately. I'm currently logging onto the PC

Li

No, it has nothing to do with HDMI. It's way too wide for that. In addition, that would not be inside, especially since the old laptop only supports VGA. Must be for some kind of drive or something.

cu

Since the shape is so unique, here is an example:

It is an outdated PCI extension for notebooks, you can already see from the thickness of your notebook that it is a little older.

In fact, it's a (I don't know the exact term) PCI Express Card interface to expand your notebook with USB ports, ESATA ports, etc.

Edit: I just looked a little closer, the term is already there in my Ebay link. It is a PCMCIA Express Card, more precisely with what appears to be 26 contacts.

Maybe a slot for some kind of memory card.

Ma

This is called a PC Card or PCMCIA. Various modules can be used here, such as drives or cellular networks. The whole thing is already out of date because there are better solutions via USB or Bluetooth these days.

Li

That's cool. I often miss USB ports because I only have a few. So an extension like this comes in handy for me.

cu

I can't tell you whether I can recommend such a card, or especially the one from the link. Again there are some price differences.

In addition, I would measure, it should be the said 54mm from the picture of me.

If you generally prefer to shop on Amazon, here is the same card on Amazon:

The reviews don't look that bad.

Al

A floppy drive maybe?

Gu

CD drive?

Is the CD drive not identical to the other drive? If the laptop comes from the first generation, it is possible.

But the thickness of the plastic part would be more interesting. Or rather, in what relation it is built. Otherwise it would just be a card reader. This is how it looks from my point of view. Card reader. Extremely enlarged.

At least I'm of the opinion that a CD drive looks different and regardless of whether sound, text, music, DVD or x content comes in via this carrier.

P.S. How did you get your user name? Also, how did you get your name?

Mine came about because everything I tried was already taken. I just really want to know if you are / are restricted. I'm also autistic.

Gu

Oh thank you. Anyone else who shares my opinion that it can't be a CD drive.

Li

I don't even know if I'll even get something like this, because I'll soon want to buy a PC and then no longer have to rely on many connections on the laptop.

Still thanks for the answer and for the links.

cu

It's a pleasure. Mainly I wanted to give a better answer than the two with the answer: "CD drive".

Anyone who has ever seen a CD drive knows that this can't be!
In addition, you already said that this slot is ABOVE the CD drive. This immediately rules it out.

The links served more as confirmation of my statement, so the "therealkickers" can see the enlightning answer of the "quiz master".
Sorry, but that allusion had to be now.

cu

The quiz master's enlightning answer is there.

Where is the feedback now?
Or are you speechless?

Gu

It is uncertain whether something like this is worthwhile.

I would recommend a "USB adapter enlarge thing". I can pick out a link for you right away.

This would have the advantage, for example, that you can connect a normal UBS stick, data on it, continue working on a somewhat newer device and connect it again. If you buy such an outdated memory card, only you can use it. That would be stupid if you didn't get something into the school computer because the devices are newer.

I mean that difference.

cu

Somewhat outdated memory card

This is not a memory card. This card is out of date, but it is only an interface for USB connections. You can connect a normal USB stick to it and continue using it on another PC. He also upgrades the PC with USB 3, if only USB 2 is available.

I would recommend a "USB adapter enlarge thing".

You mean a USB hub.

Gu

Here comes the promised link. The thing is called differently in Saturn. But it doesn't matter, right? It does the same benefit and end.

Gu

With the "USB HUB" I agree with you. The name really didn't occur to me.

For the other, my head is too tired now (writing time: December 4th, 2020 at around 12:24 a.m.). It is uncertain whether he will understand more tomorrow or in the next few days. Too high for my (little) sparrow brain. Or rather, I'm a person who is not averse to technology, but it is still too high for me.

Since it seems that the technology is a bit older, this type of memory card or replacement memory card belongs in the museum. And the end.

Didn't the questioner just write in an answer that this device will soon end up in a material yard anyway? If so, we have now cleared up the mystery of this ominous connection and that's it.

Please read this statement through again tomorrow, which I'm giving you now.

Yes that thing is old! But just as you can connect a sound card or graphics card to a normal desktop computer via PCI, you can install a card here to give the laptop 2x USB 3.0 ports.

If you now have an older laptop, then you are very happy with the speed of USB 3.0, especially since the questioner also installed an SSD.

You can then connect your USB hub, a USB stick, a USB hard drive or anything else to this card and breathe a little life into the laptop.

But it is not a memory card!

Gu

Many thanks for the answer. Or, to put it better: to bring subject Chinese into German. Actually, I'm a person who understands the German language. (Mother language is German.) Nevertheless, yesterday it was just too high for me, or rather, maybe too tired.

I have to have a computer running. Remote diagnostics are not yet fully developed despite the latest technology. At least for me. Maybe it's just that.
