My wife's laptop (Medion, Akoya from Aldi, about 4 years old) boots over the medieval dos and then gets stuck somewhere for freeDOS
what should I enter at C: \>?
I have created a USB Boot Stick from my PC / Windows 10 / with Rufus and ISO and all harassment
So if only freeDOS is on it you will not be able to start Windows.
Usually you have to enter "win".
You should install Windows7 or Windows10 on it, if your wife is right (and no data is left on it that will be needed).
What did she do earlier? How did she manage to work with it? Ask her.
Windows 10 is not free. For this you need a valid license.
I also recommend to install Linux Mint instead of Windows. It works like this:
Download Linux Mint ISO: http://mirror.wtnet.de/linuxmint-cd/stable/19.1/linuxmint-19.1-cinnamon-64bit.iso
Flash the ISO with an https://www.balena.io/...io/etcher/ tool on an empty USB stick.
Insert the created stick into the laptop. Turn on the laptop and immediately press F2. Now you are in UEFI. Here you have to disable secureboot and put the stick in the boot order in the first place. Save and exit.
The laptop restarts and boots the stick. Just follow the instructions of the installer. It also offers the possibility to completely delete the hard disk and sets up the same wireless. The following will be installed immediately: Firefox, Libreoffice, GIMP image editing, multimedia components and tools. Upon completion of the installation and the first reboot, the update manager will contact you. One should install these updates.
Linux Mint has a start menu like Windows and is easy to use. To install programs like this: Under Linux Mint there's an application management. This is like an appstore. Here you will find numerous programs.
When a new version of Linux Mint is released, the update manager will report it and provide an update.
Here is a video of what Linux Mint looks like:
