Broken laptop cable?

My laptop charging cable is several years old and pretty worn out. It has been looking like this for a few weeks now, but because I didn't think it was that bad, I didn't do anything about it. However, a few sparks have been flying since today when the power is on and the angle is not right. For financial reasons, buying a new charger would not be my favorite. Are there ways I can continue to use it?

There are only ways to continue using it if you have a soldering iron.

Otherwise you have to have a new power supply, you can also have a look on ebay or something.

The insulation is broken and causes short circuits at the break point… Such a power supply unit has enough power that, in the worst case, a fire can result. There are ways to attach a different connector, but you need some experience / knowledge and a few parts. Universal power supplies from the accessories are also not that expensive. A new one would be appropriate.

So one possibility that I can think of is: You could cover it with self-amalgamating silicone tape (from Spita, for example).

On the other hand, this is of course a tinkering, a patchwork, which should be advised against for the sake of security.

Theoretically you could also - assuming the appropriate idea - cut the cable and solder a new connector. But that would e.g. B. I don't trust myself…

You'd better see if you can find a cheap source for something new…

Sheathing is of little use if the wires are already touching and sparks are flying.

Ok then I'll have to get a new charger.

If you are a bit tech-savvy, you can solder on a new connector, which is sure to be available for 1-3 euro, maybe even for screwing.

Actually, you just have to cut off the female connector and solder a new one. Measure the outside diameter, the inside diameter and the length of the silver rod that comes out of there. It is probably a 5.5mm (outside) / 2.1mm (inside) hollow socket. They cost 1-2 euro at Reichelt.

You then add hot glue or epoxy resin to the connector and make shrink tubing around it so that it is stable and does not look stupid.

Hm, yes, you are probably right.
