HP laptop not responding to mouse?

When I plug my mouse in, it lights up, but I can't click or move anything. I've tried different mice and it doesn't work. I've tried a driver and quite a few updates. I desperately need your help!

The USB port may be the problem. If it's not software-based and it's not down to the mouse either, that's the only thing I can think of.
