Laptop (Linux Ubuntu) no longer recognizes external speakers, what can I do?

Dear Computer Experts,

Recently my laptop (HP EliteBook 8460p, SSD hard disk with Linux Ubuntu 16.4) plays notes and especially music (I would like to hear about the "Rhythmbox") only via the internal speakers. Why can this be, and what can I do, so that the external speakers or headphones (properly connected via jack and powered by USB) do not hang around useless until I can possibly buy a new device?

Install… Pavucontrol… This will allow you to fine-tune your audio settings. Open the terminal and enter this command and execute it.

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

Have lots of fun with it.
