Yesterday I received a ThinkPad T430i from my father. However, I do not know yet what it can do! Can you tell me?

The "i" behind the name usually means injection. Which in turn means injector. Injector thus roughly describes the way in which energy is converted into work.

Usually on a laptop so on the battery or the power adapter. Maybe there's another possibility for the ThinkPad, of which the community still does not know anything, just the "i".

Thanks a lot! But what else can a ThinkPad do?

The processor is an Intel i3-3120M Dual Core installed there. It has 4GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive. In addition, a DVD burner, webcam with microphone and memory card reader. The integrated graphics unit is used by the processor. The device can boot from USB.

That's too weak for gaming. It is sufficient for Internet, text processing, music and videos.

I would install a Linux distribution on this device. For example, the official Ubuntu-devirat Lubuntu. It's like a rocket and barely scratching on system resources. Windows, on the other hand, is a lame duck. Here is the download of the ISO: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/...-amd64.iso

Then flick the ISO with this tool https://www.balena.io/...io/etcher/ on an empty formatted USB stick. Then simply boot this stick and follow the instructions of the installer. He sets up the Wi-Fi right now. To do this, have network keys ready. For the installation I recommend the option to delete hard disk and install Lubuntu. I recommend a full installation. The latest Firefox, Libreoffice, multimedia components and tools will be installed right away. After completing the installation and the first reboot, the Update Manager logs in the taskbar. One should install these updates. The updating can also be completely automated so that it runs in the background.

How to install programs: Start Menu> System Tools> Software. This is operated like an Appstore. Most of it can be found there.

Sometimes you have to install programs that are not available in the appstore. Such programs exist for Ubuntu and the Devirate (which also includes Lubuntu) as a DEB file. These are installation packages that can be easily installed by double-clicking. Examples:

Google Earth Pro Desktop (now free): https://www.google.com/...wnload-pro

Skype: https://go.skype.com/...nux-64.deb

Google Chrome: https://www.google.com/...de/chrome/

Minecraft: https://launcher.mojang.com/...ecraft.deb If Java is not already installed, it will be automatically installed.
Youtube-Downloader and converter: https://www.4kdownload.com/de/products/product-videodownloader

Google Web Designer: https://webdesigner.withgoogle.com/intl/de_de

During the installation of these programs an entry will be added to the package sources so that if new versions can be updated via the Update Manager. You do not have to update every single program like with Windows.

My answer above is a fake. Have you noticed, too? Your question is a bit special. You do not buy LT for what it can do.

Usually all computers can do the same. Some LTs have special features that are permanently installed. Almost everything else you can change.

For example, I have an LT with an SD slot, which was important to me to be able to boot from an SD card. There was no burner for that. But that did not matter because I changed it.

For high-tech games an LT is not suitable. Too slow, little memory, no good Graka, etc.
