Wlan / Wi-Fi through several walls: chipset RTL8812AU as good or even better than Atheros? Should I use / exchange antennas?

I need a really good wireless receiver because I receive my Internet through several walls. In my laptop is a card with Atheros chipset and as good as with my laptop I receive the network with no other device / adapter / card. Atheros is known for quality and that makes itself quite noticeable in my constellation). As I said, but I also need a very good USB wireless adapter (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz).

Also very good to be devices with a Realtek chipset, especially RTL8812au. They would even be cheaper (dual band). Does anyone of you have experience with the two manufacturers or maybe someone knows very well with it? Are the Realtek maybe even better? Or should I definitely buy a device with Atheros in it?

Or maybe you have an even better proposal?

What about antennas? What would you recommend?

I'm not about gadgets a la Aircrack / Kali / Wardriving but only about the quality of reception in a house through several walls.

Unfortunately, I can't attach an antenna to the router because I'm surfing via public hotspots (that's honestly the reason I have no say in Wi-Fi hacking as I said).

The manufacturer of the chip seems to me in your case to be less important than a good antenna. Look out for a directional antenna.

How about if you populate a router with OpenWRT and this can dial into the hotspot. If you take the right router, you can easily populate it with other antennas.
