Why doesn't it show my SD card?

I found a memory card and put it in my laptop. There's the typical noise that something has been plugged into the PC, but it does not seem to recognize anything. It is the following card (Hama 512 MB, Secure Digital Card). I don't understand what this little switch on the edge of the card is for either. What does it mean when it's up or down? I hope someone can help me to restore the pictures on it.

It should be read-only and not write-protected
