My external hard drive (WD Elements, 5TB, USB 3.0, power supply via external power supply) is no longer recognized on my laptop when I plug it into the USB 3.0 slots. If I plug it into the USB 2.0 slots, it will be recognized.
This is not the end of the world, but it is still a shame, since 3.0 transfers data much faster than 2.0.
Does anyone have any idea what it could be?
Until recently, it was still possible. Other devices are still recognized by the 3.0 slots. Only the hard drive is not.
Maybe you need a suitable USB cable so that you can even operate on USB 3.0. But you also have to make sure that your hard drive has really good speed, because otherwise USB 3.0 will not do anything because the speed between USB 3.0 and 2.0 is no different.
Maybe on the USB3 port?
Does it work with other devices?
I'm not an expert, but 2.5 "HDDs, as far as I know from my own experience, are actually operated without a power supply unit and supplied with power directly via the USB port, although I'm now also assuming a desktop PC I don't have a laptop and haven't used a 2.5 "5 GB HDD yet.
If you use Windows, you could use USBDeView to remove the entries for connecting this HDD to the USB 3.0 port, reboot, and then reconnect it.

Unless it is a 3.5 "HDD, which of course requires an external power supply.
It is this 3.5 "plate: https://smile.amazon.de/gp/product/B00NAQG0VY/
Thanks for the links. I will definitely try it out.
I wrote it. Other devices work on the same USB port
