Copy hard drive data from a defective laptop to a data carrier and format it?

I have 2 defective laptops and am trying to copy data from the hard disks from the defective laptops to data storage media and then format them. It's a Lenovo ideapad 100-14IBY and a Toshiba Satellite A200-29. I have an external 3.5 inch hard drive and heard you need a 2.5 inch hard drive for the Lenovo. Then I have an adapter USB to SATA S-ATA IDE 2.5 "3.5" hard disk DVD + SATA data cable #USK in eBay, so an external adapter USB 2.0 to SATA and IDE for 2.5 ", 3.5" IDE and S-ATA hard disks and 5.25 "Drives bought. Unfortunately, the connection with the new laptop was unsuccessful for both hard drives. Maybe I connected it incorrectly or the parts do not fit? What can you do? See photos.

The best way to do this is to use such small "docking stations": https://www.amazon.de/...B0722Z5C4J

If a pure adaptr then such a:
https://www.amazon.de/...00N4JLNXM/ ÅMÅŽÕÑ & crid = 284A4IINUHIWN & dchild = 1 & keywords = hard drives + adapter + usb & qid = 1602267481 & s = computers & sprefix = hard drives + adapter% 2Ccomputers% 2C164 & sr = 1-12
The 3.5 "plates need an additional power supply

The small adapters are totally sufficient.

What there, as far as I can see on the 1st picture, is that the plate does not get any juice because you only plugged in the data cable. And what kind of disk (in terms of interfaces) is still available can't be seen / found here.

I write yes

Personally, I use docking stations for on the go, but I also use them differently…

Ar

If you (have to) read out a disk or clone it to an SSD during all the holy times, then such an adapter is enough. But everyone has their preferences. Ah… And the 2nd part (addendum?) Was only visible when I had already tipped off.

Correctly.
This can't work without electricity. 😉

See MichaelSAL74's answer.

In your previous setup you are still missing Sata power (the large connector that is still free on the hard drive) and a suitable power supply unit. This is not included in the scope of delivery of your adapter (

In addition, your adapter is only connected with USB 2.0, which in the best case reaches 60MB / s. The data backup therefore takes an unnecessarily long time. Buy a docking station / another adapter for 2.5 "data carriers with USB 3.0 and a power supply.

Jopp I wrote it up, pardon me

Sure, adapters are enough, hence the addendum
