Reduce screen resolution?

I want to watch a movie but it doesn't work because it tells me that I have to reduce the screen resolution or color depth. How do I do that?

Under Settings, System, Display

With screen resolution, there's normally "recommended" there's a drop-down field where the setting can be adjusted.

Then try Advanced Display Settings. But remember what everything was originally set and how before changes were made.
