Why is the i7 CPU in my laptop just such a tiny hard-wired chip?

While in a desktop PC the CPU is pretty big, where is the rest?

If that is really so small in the laptop why is it comparable in terms of performance?

If you are able (d) to disassemble a laptop accident-free and damage-free (to find out) and to put it back together properly, you should actually have enough know-how to sort out the differences or to know the philosophy between pc and a mobile laptop.

Lo

I first hit my fist through the display and then neatly screwed and disassembled the rest

It struck me, even that the Nvidia graphics card was ridiculously tiny tiny vlt. Like a 50 cent piece compare to my very big 1070 Ti

It seems extremely disproportionate because the desktop devices are not 100x as fast as these mini fingers, even though they are 100x that big

If you spell troll questions with plausible sounding descriptions, you will not ask good ones for a long time.

Lo

That's not a troll question, you probably do not know. But then you should not answer, I refer to the Girlfriend rules

A mobile i7 is not like a desktop chip.

They have a TDP of 15/25/35 / 45W while the desktop counterparts start at 65W and go to 135W.

Also, a desktop CPU (of the same generation) has more cores (at present 6 physically in the desktop, four in laptops, in the previous generation two each less).

But the desktop chip is v. A. So big because the IHS is much larger and thus has a better heat distribution, a mobile CPU could not be such a big package, otherwise the devices would be much thicker.

Lo

So it would be theoretically possible to build the desktop chips much smaller, they are just so big so you can derive the heat better?

Because they are all the same size, no matter how many cores, power, etc

Mo

The desktop chips are just as thick as the mobile chips. The IHS, the heatspreader that is always on the CPUs, increases the whole CPU tremendously, if you were to behead the CPU, so remove the IHS, as is sometimes done with some Intel models, then the chip would have the same height resp Would be marginally thicker

"I also noticed that the Nvidia graphics card was ridiculously tiny small vlt. Like a 50 cent piece compare to my very big 1070 Ti"

Then you did not compare properly. The reason why the desktop graphics card is so much bigger is the reason for the cooling due to the custom design. The chip itself is also extremely small! Often below 300mm².

Here is the chip of your 1070 ti:

One is a cost issue.

The smaller something gets, the higher the effort and cost, so a mobile CPU is more expensive than a desktop CPU

Mobile CPUs do not achieve the same performance as a desktop CPU and can therefore be kept smaller.

Mobile CPUs are mounted in grid (ballpins) and are therefore smaller.

etc. Etc.

Z.b a 5000ccm engine is bigger than a 2000ccm engine. Do more, too.

Bo

They are not the same size, there are more transistors on them, but they are the same height, as Peter944 said.

But they are not much bigger, look at delid pictures.
