Why is the internet slow on only one device?

My problem is that I only get 110Mbps on my laptop with Lan cable when downloading and the normal 250Mbps on other devices with Lan cable. But the upload speed is always the same at 25Mbps. And so my question is how I can get the full speed of 250Mbps on my laptop. By the way, it doesn't matter which LAN cable I take with the laptop, I always reach 110Mbps for download and 25Mbps for upload. And the laptop is 4 months old and earlier I reached the full 250Mbps.

Ya

Maybe the laptop is very old and the mainboard doesn't support 250MBps

Ma

No, I forgot to write that the laptop is 4 months old and earlier I reached 250Mbps

gr

Open Windows Settings and then click on "Change Network and Internet / Adapter Options". Right click on "Ethernet" and then on "Status". What does "transmission rate" mean?

Ma

The transfer rate is 1.0 GBit / s

gr

Did you already restart the router?

What happens if you use a different LAN port on the router?

You could also reset the network. You can do this in the Windows settings under "Network and Internet".

Ma

Because I have already restarted router but it is still the same.

Another port I've used is the same again.

And I've reset the network on Windows 2 times, but it's the same result again.

gr

How exactly do you test the speed?

Connect the laptop directly to one of the other PCs using a LAN cable so that the router is no longer used. Then try to copy the largest possible file from one PC to another and measure how long it takes.

Ma

1. I measure the speed with speedtest.net

2. If a file is 30gb in size and how should I transfer the file to the other pc

gr

30 GB is completely sufficient. In theory, you should reach 1 Gbit / s with a direct connection. The copying should therefore take about 240 seconds. (30 GB * 8/1 Gbit / s)

You can transfer the file with Windows file sharing. How to share a folder on the network is explained here:

Ma

OK, I'll only do it tomorrow because today I have almost no time. But I'm only doing 12 gb tomorrow for testing.

Ma

I have now done two tests.

The first test took me 2:09 minutes.

And the second time was 2:10 minutes.

The file was 12.5gb in size.

gr

12.5 GB = 100 GBit

100 GBit / 129 s = 0.775 GBit / s = 775 MBit / s

Apparently your laptop can receive data quickly enough. The hardware and the LAN cable should be ok.

Can you copy the file so quickly when the connection is made through the router?

One possibility would be that it is the browser. Try another browser or the Speedtest.net desktop app. https://www.speedtest.net/...ps/windows

Ma

1. I can only do that with the data in 3 hours.

2. I tried the app and 2 other browsers.

gr

So basically we've already gone through all the options. It should actually run as fast as on the other PCs. Did you do the test again on the other PCs? May be that your internet connection does not bring the full 250 Mbit / s at all times of the day. And have you tried other speed tests?

Otherwise, you could try Linux. So boot your laptop from a Linux USB stick. If it works then you may have to reinstall Windows completely.

Ma

I have now tried it on another PC and there I reach full speed and yes I have also tried other speed tests, for example: https://www.wieistmeineip.at/speedtest/

Could you please send me a video explaining that with Linux.

gr

Here is another guide: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/de/latest/burn.html

Ma

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Ma

I just ran it on my laptop for testing the Linux on a virtual machine and when I did a speed test there I got the full speed.

My question is whether I should still try to boot with the USB stick or whether it is already a result that I should reinstall Windows?

gr

In this case it has to be Windows, the LAN driver or the network settings.

Resetting the network should actually reinstall the driver and reset all settings to default values. It's strange that it didn't work.

Can you download the latest LAN driver for your laptop and install it manually? That should be found on the manufacturer's website.

If that doesn't work either, just reinstall Windows or reset (in the settings under "Update and Security / Restore"). But in that case, you should also download all drivers that may be needed before starting the reinstallation. And of course save all important data, then all of them will be deleted.

Although… There's another option. But it is not very likely that this will work. You could change the MAC address of your laptop. It is sufficient if you change the last digit of the address by one. How this is done is explained here:
