The battery indicator on my old laptop flashes continuously for days and feels like it never stops by itself. It only stops when I take the battery out and put it back in. The laptop is not connected to the power, so it is shut down & closed.
Does that mean that the laptop is still on somehow or does that simply mean that the battery is dead?

When your laptop is off, it's never really off either.
That's it - the laptop isn't plugged in, shut down, and sometimes it doesn't even run out of battery. That scares me a little.

As I said, the laptop is never really off. If you want you can take it to an expert or ask the manufacturer.
Windows shows the status of the battery, have you ever looked into it?
