Hdmi on VGA connected to old monitor now I have no sound anymore how can I change that I have sound again?

I have a new notebook and an old VGA monitor that I would like to continue using. So I ordered an HDMI to VGA cable but now I have no sound either on the second monitor or on the notebook monitor. The sound is only back when I remove the HDMI cable.
