I bought a new laptop and if the screen is black (not turned off), are there lighter spots around the edges, especially on the left? What can that be? Is that a defect? As I said, the laptop is brand new -.

That can be normal. If you have a screen with normal backlighting, i.e. Not AMOLED, then the light-emitting diodes are at the corners that light up on the side in a frosted glass pane, which then illuminates the LCD from behind.

Depending on the quality of this pane and your critical assessment, this can be annoying, but it is a consequence of the fact that you want to build the displays very thin, but AMOLED is very expensive.

It is also better for the eyes. In the past, there were more smaller lights directly behind the frosted glass and shone directly into your face. That was thicker and blinded. So now a bright picture doesn't dazzle as much and the display is thin. In the case of a virtually black picture, in a dark environment, this has the effect described.

Be nice to your eyes, accept that and increase the brightness of the environment, then you will not see it and you will protect your eyes.
