Does a system image as a backup make sense or would normal Windows backup be considered?

I would like to restore my laptop again and delete everything completely.

However, the data on the laptop is very important and since it is now so scattered around on the hard drive and it would take me forever to look for the files that I do not want to lose, I just thought of a system image on an external hard drive then restore the laptop, then access the image as desired via a virtual hard disk and gradually retrieve my data.

Is that possible? And does that make sense? I have already made the image, now I'm just afraid that I will not be able to access the image and that all my data will become "unusable", so to speak.

If you can access the image now, you can do it later. So give it a try! Does it exist as vhd / vhdx (because you wrote "virtual disk")?
