I want to buy a screen that has an HDMI 1.4 input. My laptop has only normal HDMI. Is that compatible with each other or need?

Of course, the whole thing is backward compatible.

HDMI in higher version numbers can do things like 4K. But the whole thing is uninteresting with laptop.

Actually, HDMI is not like USB 1.0 or 3.0, it would have to work.
