What are the disadvantages of low RAM?

In a nutshell: If I play games on my laptop, GPU, CPU, hard drive, etc. For the games are clearly more than sufficient, but I have too little RAM, what are the disadvantages while playing?

I have a laptop with 8GB RAM, completely sufficient for all games played so far (I do NOT play AAA games on my laptop). But now I want to get several games that have 16GB RAM under "Recommended".

What specific disadvantages do I have when I'm playing?

Ro

Ramlags. Is the RAM full? The game hangs briefly and first has to empty the RAM again and feed it with new data

ca

So is the game already loading when you start it? Or even while you are playing?

Ro

Usually only when you play. But it is not a permanent jerk. But only every few seconds. Or when the RAM is full. As long as it is not full you have full fps

El

While playing…

Since the memory content has to be constantly swapped out to the hard disk or the SSD and that puts additional strain on the CPU.

ca

OK. And that with emptying the RAM will probably do DURING the game, correct? That would be the explanation for the lag.

But 8GB doesn't fill up that fast, right?

Ro

Naturally. He always needs the data he needs in the game. And these days, 8GB can be full in a matter of seconds. Especially when he has to load a lot of stuff.

Great, nice to hear. So it would make sense to expand the RAM. Can you give me any tips?

Hi

Windows shovels more or less data from RAM to hard drive.
There used to be the cheapest, built-in graphics cards that used up RAM.
So 3D landscapes we probably calculate your graphics card.

Ro

See what's inside beforehand. Best of all, exactly the same memory. Otherwise everyone goes with the same rhythm and timing.

The PC has to move data to the SSD / HDD from time to time and reload it from it, which can lead to stuttering. If there's no explicit 16 GB minimum, you don't need it either, it just plays more smoothly with 16 GB.

If the game does not have to store all of the data and assets in RAM, this can lead to severe stuttering in the game and fluctuating FPS. As long as it is only "recommended" and not the minimum, it is usually still possible, many games then also have settings with which you can reduce the load, e.g. By reducing the range of vision.

Thanks for the answer.

No, all my games run problem-free with 8GB, the 16GB are under the category "recommended"
