Laptop hangs with power adapter?

I have a problem there. I bought a new power supply today because I accidentally broke something off the other one. As soon as I connect the new power supply, the laptop hangs extremely. If I have not connected the power adapter, my laptop runs smoothly. What could that be? Can I do something about it?
