How do I open pictures on the laptop?

I took pictures on my Canon camera but now the pictures can't be opened on the camera or on the laptop. It always says

"This file format is probably not supported."

Does anyone have any advice for me?

Look what file format it is (the name is after the period, e.g. Test.txt is of the file format txt), and download a program that can open this file format. (Simply search for "Programm to open FATEIFORMAT file" on Google)

Can actually only happen if you have saved the images as a RAW file (CR2) AND your Windows lacks the necessary codecs.
