Is a laptop with a 4th generation Intel processor still up to date?

My mother organized a laptop for me in a shop like this, which buys used laptops and overhauls them.

The man on the phone only gave her the following information:

Fujitsu brand
13 inch screen / HD LED display
i5 4th generation
4 GB of RAM
500 GB hard drive
Windows 10

I only know about computers, unfortunately I don't know what performance standards there are for laptops. But since the guy didn't name the graphics card, GHz for the processor or the period of use, I suspect that he is hoping for unsuspecting buyers.

He offered 160 euro for the laptop. What do you all mean?

When you read your headline, I started to fear that it might still be a mobile Pentium IV. 😨

If you actually have a mobile Intel Core i5 with 2 cores / 4 threads, I see it much more relaxed. That's enough for Office and Internet with an active firewall + AV real-time scan.

If it is even a mobile Intel Core i5-4000 series, then I only see the integrated Intel HD 4x00 graphics with codecs like HEVC / H.265 as a weak point with regard to the most modern video formats.

For 160 euro incl. Win 10 can at least be expected to be a solid platform for Office & Internet, but at most only very resource-saving games.

I also suspect a battery with advanced signs of wear, which, however, does not prevent stationary operation on the network.

"HD display" (HD 720 or 720p) indicates a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels on a 13 "display.

So my mom's option was. I think it would be better to pay 100 euro more and buy something like the "Lenovo Chromebook S345-14AST" for it. In any case, I'll call them myself tomorrow and have them give me everything in detail.

You can't get a notebook with technically up-to-date processors for less than 300 to 350 euro.

Your so-called "Chromebook" unfortunately only contains old AMD basic technology from around 2012/2013, which only experienced slight increases in efficiency before AMD Ryzen.

Just enter in a search engine what exactly AMD's A6-9220e is about. You will be unpleasantly amazed.

So your mother didn't make the wrong decision about the purchase.

Hmm So, I need the laptop for my studies. This means that it should already have a good battery life, handle several tabs in the browser, and perhaps also be able to play videos of slightly higher resolution without problems. I'm not interested in games. I'll take a look at the device on site tomorrow. Which laptop around 300 euro can you recommend for my purposes?

Br

AMD a6 is not even optimal for this. 🙄

So I stick to your mom's decision. She will have had her reasons, if she didn't even read here as an inspiration for her decision… 🤔

Unfortunately, there's nothing brand new to get for 300 euro with the latest technology and "long-life battery"

Do you have to have high-resolution videos and the latest codec for your studies?

If so, then at least a mobile AMD Athlon 200/300 to 3000, or a mobile Intel Pentium Silver / Gold from "Skylake" upwards in the book.

Everything with 2 cores / 4 threads and an iGPU that can also use HEVC / H265 in hardware.

A really good battery is not included for 300 to 400 euro.

Unless you could get a book at a reduced price as part of an apprenticeship or study. But you would have to stretch yourself.

But basically I stick to my opinion of your mother's goodwill.
