Take a look at Linux Multimedia Studio. (LMMS) For a fee, I can only recommend FL Studio. There's not much for free. Or search for Magix Music Maker.

I don't know if this app works on laptops, but I would recommend the "Score Creator". It's easy to use, you can listen to what you've composed, and it's free as long as you don't have the premium version.
