Windows 10 partition size?

I'm buying a new laptop and want to set a storage partition for the operating system. Operating system is Windows 10. At the moment you need min. 20GB for 64-bit. Does anyone know how much Windows 10 or the next Windows operating system will need in the future?

Is it enough if I set up 45GB or should it be more?

Additionally, should I save the operating system on my HDD or SSD?

Bo

Operating system on SSD. Nobody can tell you how big it will be. Why a separate partition?

Em

I would never do that and certainly not so small!

It is said again and again that, for example, 128GB is enough for a boot SSD. From my point of view, this is wrong (and experience confirms this), because even if you try to save software consistently on another partition or disk: Data always (ALWAYS!) End up on the system drive - and that is full at some point.

So I would always try to make the system disk fast and big, e.g. At least one 500GB SSD (if not bigger) and then either a second SSD or an HDD with as much space as possible.

Is clearer.
The operating system gets one, my profile goes on the HDD (ie document, photos, etc.) and the "most important programs" on the SSD.

In my opinion, it is clearer if you define and sort everything directly.

ma

Have 512 GB SSD and 2TB HDD

ma

How would you best divide them up?

Em

Not at all.

Bo

For a private PC? I'm sorry, but that's not really necessary. Sort it at file level

ma

OK thanks

You present it as if there was a "correct" in the statements about the size of the system partition. For you, 128 GB is not enough. FOR OTHERS, these 128 GB are enough.

If John Smith only installs a browser and Office products, 64 GB will probably be enough for him. Even if he will never clear his cache.

If John Doe edits videos, installs games in the standard folders, etc., 1 TB will probably not be enough for him.

64 GB is sufficient for Windows itself. This is a fact, otherwise these computers with 64 GB eMMC memory would not work. Whether it makes sense is another question.

Qu

What is unnecessary about it now? He can buy a small SSD and store his documents / photos on the much cheaper HDD.

So what? Just because it doesn't suit your purpose doesn't mean the idea is bad per se.

Maybe he has 1.5 TB of photos lying around. Then, if he listened to your advice, he would have to get a 2 TB SSD. And the setup is far more expensive than 256 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD.

No. I say very clearly that this is the case from my point of view and experience.

Bo

I never said but he wants to use multiple partitions. How so?
