Installation compile Java + program?

I have a question! I have to install Java on my laptop and run a program in Textpad. My problem is the file path where I should save java and the program. I have a 64-bit system and have downloaded the (hopefully) correct files. Would be great if someone knows what to do. The best thing would be foolproof step-by-step instructions.
