Laptop: bypass password?

I bought a laptop from a "friend" some time ago. He also set everything up for me and explained to me that I would come in there for two weeks and then need a password, which he wanted to give me later. Unfortunately, this "friend" has not been found since then, and I sit here with the feeling that I have been completely screwed and that I'm also to blame. Nevertheless, and precisely because I have spent a lot of money on it, which I definitely will never see again, I wonder if this password can be somehow circumvented. Or should I rather buy a new one (this time, of course, in a specialist shop)?

You can certainly avoid it, but who knows what your "friend" did. So I would just reinstall Windows (or whatever operating system).
