My laptop said goodbye a few days ago with a loud bang. Unfortunately I was not there myself and therefore can't make any statements about the "exact" noise. The laptop was off after that. I removed the hard drive to back up the data. I noticed that this gets very hot when the data is copied. The laptop comes on again. The hard disk utilization was 100% all the time. The power supply gets so hot that you can hardly touch it for longer than a few seconds. At the time of the "bang" the laptop was connected to the power supply.
At first glance, I didn't discover any broken capacitors. Programs like HDTune show no hard drive errors. The copying was also smooth.
Any tips on what could have caused the "bang"?

Sure it came from the laptop? I think a capacitor has burst in the power supply.
I was not there and therefore can't answer this. But I can also imagine that the person who was there did not correctly locate the sound. Would the power supply still work despite the damage (namely it does)

Then the power supply is broken. I would not use it anymore. So take it off and screw it on, it's broken anyway. Then you see what has burst there.
If the fault is in the power supply unit, consequential damage can occur.
For example, if the capacitor that is defective is now deaf, the AC voltage component can then trigger some things.
From my point of view, it is sensible to save the data and purchase a reliable other PC.
As a tip, instead of an HDD, boot a small SSD or even SD or external medium…
If something happens there, your main PC is already in use and the damage is around 0 …
I wish you success
PS a good opportunity to try Linux.
