Jo, I just installed Linux Mint on an old laptop. The welcome window offered me to update my graphics driver, I did. Well, when restarting everything is normal only when entering the password my screen is off not only dark it is simply off. After I have simply entered my password, the screen is on again. Do I have to live with it or is it normal that the screen is off when entering the password?

Not really, it will probably be because the driver (as with any operating system) is not yet loaded at the time.
You could try to start Mint with the start option 2nomodeset ", how it works is described here:
