My gaming notebook is only "15.6" inches, but the bag shouldn't be particularly large. Can someone tell me whether the notebook fits in there and whether there's still space for extra padding or something.

And the backpack from HP seems to have very little space for the price. I've been using several of Dicota for a long time, they offer a lot of space for the price, have chest and waist belt and are also cleanly padded (already tested with an involuntary fall from the bike). It also has not only 1 inner compartment for the laptop and the rest is totally free, but 3 more of which the middle one is also a bit padded.
